Yi-
Ping Luo Morishige was born in Hunan, China in 1949. She studied
at the Affiliated School of the
Central
Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Following in the footsteps of the Great
Masters of European
painting,
Yi-Ping was taught in the academy style where she drew from plaster casts.
It is during this
time
that she mastered the technique of ’chiaroscuro’. She developed her area
of expertise in oil
portraits
done in the traditional wet into wet thick impasto style taught at the
academy.
Yi-Ping
emigrated to America in 1979 and settled in Hawaii. She soon found success
as a fashion
illustrator
for clients such as J.C. Pennys and other major fashion retailers. Although
Yi-Ping's
illustrations
were well received, she yearned to fulfill her lifelong dream to explore
her talent as a
fine
artist. In 1996, Yi-Ping finally felt the time was ripe so she immersed
herself in producing a
succession
of creative acrylic paintings. In this new 'Angels' series,
Yi-Ping's academy foundation
manifests
itself unmistakably. But the traditional impasto strokes have evolved
into a more modern style.
The
surface treatment is much smoother and cleaner. Detailing is consistent
throughout the composition.
Shadow
areas are bestowed the same attention as those in the mid-tone
and highlights. The muted earth
tone
colors associated with more traditional styles are supplanted by vibrant
colors expressive of today's
fashions.
The result is her signature style–an original technique that renders her
pieces outstanding.
One
may, at first mistake Yi-Ping's paintings as being photo realistic. However,
upon closer observation,
one
realizes that her art has much more to offer. Although Yi-Ping uses photos
for reference, she never
relies
on it as a substitute for reality as she draws from her years of experience
at painting from life.
Her
art comes alive with this unique style of realism. Underneath the surface
beauty of Yi-Ping’s
paintings
lie more profound sensibilities.
Yi-Ping's
technical skill at controlling line and color is unsurpassed. Each of her
paintings
showcases
her solid art technique. She crafts each with the precision and meticulousness
of a
diamond
cutter. A Yi-Ping ‘diamond’ reveals the multi-planar physical topography
of her figures.
Soft
and sharp edges, as well as color tone and shade are expertly modified
to create dimensional
solids
and planes. Her mastery over the interplay of light, reflected light, core
and cast shadow
allow
her paintings to breathe with life and substance. Yi-Ping's thorough knowledge
of anatomy is
clearly
evident in her figures. Each of her paintings exhibits her mastery of all
these technical areas.
Ever
seeking perfection, Yi-Ping continues to paint on a daily basis and is
totally committing herself
to
refining her art. She believes that one never stops learning, that life
continually offers new
discoveries
and challenges. Yi-ping's art is a reflection of her inner being. If you
want to know her,
one
need only look at her art. They plumbthe depth of her being and its beauty
touches one.
The
viewer is enriched from the experience. |
